Summer 2008

June 13 began my summer vacation. It's now August 14 and it's been a wonderful summer. Bob and I haven't been anywhere exotic or extremely exciting, but it's been a summer of visiting with friends, exercising regularly, and most important, hanging out with Allison.

Allison usually comes over on Tuesday's around noon and then spends the night. It's been special watching her grow from week to week. Every week she is taller, her vocabulary grows, she becomes more dramatic and expressive, and is such a special person in her grandma and grandpa's life. We just wouldn't know what we'd do without her.

I've been able to keep my yard in shape this summer, especially staying home. Mr. Le mows, edges and does trimming, which allows me to have the energy to do the fun stuff -- weeding and planting. Nothing better than being out in the garden early in the morning or late in the evening on summer days.

When Bob retired I got him bird feeders. Last year we avoided using them because they tend to attract rats and pesty birds like starlings. I really missed the daily visitors to our yard so I cleaned up the old feeders, bought a few new ones and reestablished the bird cafe. Guess what? No rats or starlings (yet). Allison loves the birds and we both enjoy sitting on the grass waiting for the hummingbirds, chickadees, finches, juncos, and occasional flicker. Her favorite, of course, are the hummingbirds.

My teaching colleague Sarah and I have been faithful exercisers throughout the summer -- something we're very proud of. We both had worked out together at the gym in Woodinville but grew tired of the place and were on the lookout for a new place to keep our bodies moving. My dear friend Lana (a life-long exerciser) reminded me of the place she goes -- Kirkland Parks, their north Kirkland site which is only 5 minutes from my house. Sarah and I readily got a Move-It pass and have enjoyed our early morning (7am) workouts followed by coffee with the gang at Starbucks. We also attend an evening class which is also great. As the summer ends and school calls me back, I'll need to say goodbye to my 7am friends and begin evening classes.

One of our out-of-the-house adventures was a four day trip to Hoods Canal to spend some time with our hilarious friends, Jim and Del Frederickson. They were full of hospitality and we enjoyed their two-bedroom trailer home on Hoods Canal -- Colony Surf. We played enough Mexican Train to last a while and made a day trip to Port Townsend. The weather was not so good, but we were cozy and warm in the trailer and always stuffed with Del's expert cuisine and the Frederickson's ongoing humor and fun.

Our dear friends who retired to Las Vegas, Roy and Cheryl, visited us so that we could all renew our friendship. We enjoyed dinner together here and Bob presented Roy with his official Seahawk jersey #37 - Alexander. For those who are up on football, Shawn Alexander, was released from the Hawks -- so, Roy could use the jersey more than Bob now -- Roy's last name: Alexander!

Currently, we are staying up way too late watching the summer Olympics. Last night I resorted to taping it -- I just couldn't take another 1am bedtime, especially with a 7am wake up call to exercise!
